In 1997, Nintendo released Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64 console as a spin-off title in their popular Mario Kart series. Developed by Rare Ltd., this racing game was designed to compete with other titles such as Super Mario Kart and need For Speed.

The main objective of Dicky Kong Racing is to finish first place in various racing events, which can be either circuit-based or off-road style courses set across different tracks based on popular Nintendo franchises like Donkey Kong Country 2: The Lost City Of Jungle. Players control one out of four playable characters - namely Diddy the Orangutan from Donkey Kong Land; Tomy & Timmy in their kart vehicles while trying to collect various power-ups scattered throughout each track.

The game also features several multiplayer modes including single player career mode where you'll race against AI opponents and two-player versus mode allowing up-to-four friends compete head-on over local connections via Nintendo 64 Link cable or four controller ports directly plugged into individual controllers themselves!
